In a stunning turn of events, tennis legend Rafael Nadal has announced his withdrawal from the Australian Open due to an injury sustained during a recent match. The news comes just days after the start of the tournament, and has sent shockwaves through the tennis world.

In a tweet posted on January 7th, 2024, Nadal shared the difficult news with his fans. "Hi all, during my last match in Brisbane I had a small problem on a muscle that as you know made me worried. Once I got to Melbourne I have had the chance to make an MRI and I have micro tear on a muscle, not in the same part where I had the injury and that’s good news.," he wrote, "Right now I am not ready to compete at the maximum level of exigence in 5 sets matches. I’m flying back to Spain to see my doctor, get some treatment and rest."

This announcement happend after a striking upset at the Brisbane International, against Jordan Thompson who showcased an outstanding performance to defeat Rafael Nadal in a thrilling three-set match. The local favorite saved three match points and managed to overcome the former world No. 1, casting doubt on Nadal's status for the Australian Open. Thompson's victory marked one of the biggest wins of his life, alongside scalps against Andy Murray and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
