The Shanghai Masters 2024 is in full flow featuring some of the best players on the tour. Here is a brief review of the important matches:
Djokovic vs. Safiullin
There was no stopping Novak Djokovic against Roman Safiullin. Djokovic, who has not won a grand slam this year, delivered a masterclass in precision and control, defeating Safiullin in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-1. This victory advanced Djokovic to the quarter-finals.
A happy Djokovic rated his performance very highly. He said: "Very close to 10. The [past two matches] are some of the best I've played in a while."
Sinner vs. Shelton
Jannik Sinner had a point to prove against Ben Shelton and he did, beating him 6-4, 7-6 (7/1). Sinner, the world number one, had lost to Shelton last year at the same event but this time emerged victorious with a straight-set win, setting up a quarter-final match against Daniil Medvedev.
Speaking of the match against Medvedev, Sinner said: "We know each other quite well now, we know exactly what to expect, more or less."
Alcaraz vs. Monfils
Carlos Alcaraz faced Gael Monfils in a battle of the young generation versus the old guard. Alcaraz managed to secure a hard-fought victory with a score of 6-4, 7-5, keeping his winning streak of 12 matches alive. This win marks Alcaraz as the first Spaniard to reach the Shanghai Masters quarter-final since Rafael Nadal in 2017. Monfils, at 38 years old, put up a strong fight but couldn't hold on to his lead in the crucial moments.
Alcaraz said after the match: “The main thing I tried in this match was to stay calm, to control my emotions and wait for my chances.”
Goffin vs. Zverev
Belgian David Goffin pulled off a major upset by defeating Alexander Zverev, the second seed, with a score of 6-4, 7-5 to reach the last eight of the Shanghai Masters 2024. Goffin, ranked No. 66, will face American Taylor Fritz, the No. 7 seed, in the next round.
Quarter-Final Lineup: Exciting Matches Ahead
The quarter-final lineup is set, featuring some exciting matchups. Djokovic will face Czech teenager Jakub Mensik, while Sinner takes on Medvedev. Alcaraz will face Tomas Machac, and the only American player left on the draw, Taylor Fritz, will face the returning veteran David Goffin.
