Women's Doubles No.1 Elise Mertens

Elise Mertens is undoubtedly the most successful female player from Belgium after Kim Clijsters and Justin Henin. Mertens reached the top of the rankings in women's doubles in May of 2021 after capturing titles at the Australian Open and Istanbul Championships and has never looked back since.

Hardly two months after getting the envied top-ranking spot, she triumphed at Wimbledon for her third Grand Slam doubles title alongside Hsieh Su-Wei to clear any doubts regarding her achievements. Earlier in 2019, Elise Mertens and Sabalenka became just the 5th pair in doubles history to complete the Sunshine Double.

The singles record of Elise Mertens isn't shabby either. Following in the footsteps of her compatriots mentioned above, she showcased her versatility and the effectiveness of an all-around playing style by winning six singles titles on the WTA Tour. Perhaps more impressively, she got to the second week of Grand Slams multiple times. She got to the fourth round once at Wimbledon and twice at the French Open, only to better that by making two quarterfinals at the US Open and a semifinal at the Australian Open, where she knocked out Elina Svitolina in straight sets, who was in the top five then.

Men's Doubles No.1 Joe Salisbury

Joe Salisbury topped the men's doubles rankings for the first time on April 4 this year. Though not as dynamic as Elise Mertens, he does not yet have an ATP Tour singles record. He has only managed a career-high singles ranking of 559. But his quick rise to the summit in men's doubles is impressive nonetheless.

It was 2018 when Salisbury first managed to win an ATP Tour doubles title, but that relatively late breakthrough did not create any doubts in his mind about his ambitions to be the best. A year later, in 2019, paired with Rajeev Ram, he made it to the fourth round. The progress continued, and in 2020, alongside Ram, Salisbury won the 2020 Australian Open, the first of his two Grand Slams. This also helped Salisbury reach a career-high doubles ranking of No.3 in the world.

After an incredible 2021 where he won his second Major at the US Open and his first Masters 1000 in Canada, Salisbury went into 2022 with great confidence. Despite losing in the quarterfinals at the Miami Open, he clinched the World No.1 ranking shortly afterward, becoming just the second British man to do so.

Women's Singles No.1 Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek is presently the talk of the town in tennis. Tennis fans and past professional players have hailed her mental toughness. Her success has led to something many tennis fans have not witnessed since the days of all-time greats such as Serena Williams and Justin Henin. Rafael Nadal has remarked that her game on clay is vastly superior to all the other players, even on different surfaces. The 35-match winning streak that saw her win the French Open for the second time in three years with the loss of just one set en route is a testament to that.

Iga Swiatek ascended to the top in women's singles on April 4, 2022, the same day as Joe Salisbury's rise to the summit in his category, after the sudden retirement of Ashleigh Barty on March 23.

Men's Singles No.1 Daniil Medvedev

Last but not least, we come to Daniil Medvedev, the current World Number 1 in men's tennis, who regained the top spot in June of 2022 after having a brief stint earlier this year.

On the whole, Medvedev has enjoyed an extraordinary journey to where he stands today, but it has sometimes been frustrating. Although he made numerous breakthroughs on the ATP Tour early on, it took him quite a bit of time to win a Grand Slam. One can't help but mention the dominance of the Big Three here. In all but one of his four Grand Slam finals, he lost to either Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal. Two of those losses came in nail-biting five-setter marathons against Nadal at the 2019 US Open and the 2022 Australian Open. Sandwiched between these is a humiliating straight-sets loss against Djokovic at the 2021 Australian Open.

Nevertheless, with sheer quality and determination, Medvedev has repeatedly proved he is a contender for the biggest trophies in tennis. He avenged his Melbourne defeat at the hands of Djokovic when he got the better of him in the US Open final later in 2021, becoming the only player to have beaten Djokovic in a Grand Slam that year.

Medvedev's success can also be attributed to his unorthodox playing style. Unlike other players, Medvedev plays very flat with his forehand and backhand, and his low bouncing shots make it very difficult for his opponents to control the point.
